At the age of 74 i have just purchased my first lathe, one of China's finest!. Seeing some of the excellent work on here, my efforts look pretty basic. My interest is in fishing and especially Centre Pin reels. I had a damaged 90 year old wooden reel and I have now turned it into a Composite reel and I am quite pleased with the result. I'm now looking for some simple projects to increase my level of skill on the lathe. Can you tell me where I might find some ideas?

PS I tried to put some photos on of the reel but don't understand how to do it

Hello John, pictures are a bit complicated! You have to make an album and then copy pictures into it from your PC.

Then you can add pictures to your posts from your album.

You can have more than one album to keep different subjects separate.

You will find Albums on the black banner at the top of the page.

Hello Bill,

The Progress looks very interesting ,as do the Elmers engine. I have sent off for the Stuart catalogue.

A simple, with the emphasis on simple, tool grinder would be of interest.

Hi John, for a simple tool grinder you might want to consider building a Worden Mk 3 I built one a few years ago. An excellent machine, and a good way of learning small-scalle engineering.

I was going to suggest a Worden. Fairly straightforward turning, some simple fitting work to tidy up rough edges. Add a few embellishments of your own, such as pretty chamfered washers and so on, and with a few accessories, (Hemingway, or your own design )you have a really useful machine to keep your cutting tools in good shape.

Yes, I like the idea of the Worden but I think i'll cut my teeth on a tool grinder by Richard Rex first.

Now I need to buy a small mill
