I will post a You tube video once I get time to put together the videos I took while doing the job.

Neil, get your sea sick tablets ready.

Look forward to the video Bob.

I can remember listening to the archers, but I see that it only ran from 1959 to 1982 a total of 6075 episodes. In the late 1990s they even axed the BBC news that was run on the all night program.

Ah, yes, the Archers – or dah-de-dah-de-dah <CLICK!> as we know it.

What have I done in my workshop today? I've drilled a 2.8mm hole.

Unfortunately it was in the middle of (and through) my finger nail… Ooyah! as they used to say in the Beano.

                Hey Tony

You are a bit of a blast from the past! – didn't you retire to the country or something? – you don't look a bit different in your 'photo!

I'm quite fond of The Archers in a way, having been exposed to it on and off for 50 odd years. The main annoyance nowadays is the preposterous cod Geordie accent of Ruth Archer. Quite why they couldn't find a real Geordie to play the character is beyond me.

                    Hi Norman

Yes I moved to the Isle of Mull 3 years ago and am still working on reestablishing my workshop. The lathe is back on its stand but there is a way to go before I start making chips in serious quantities. Also attempting to build a small rowing boat which occupies a bit of time. Hopefully normal metalworking service will be resumed before too long…

Today (well yesterday looking at the time!) I made up 2 knurled 0ba thumb screws on the myford

                                img_0490.jpg

I'm quite impressed with the quality of the knurl, considering the cheapness of the knurler. we could never get it to produce a good knurl on the mini lathe, and machining on the Myford is an absolute joy compared to the mini lathe!img_0488.jpg

They are to plug up the 2 holes on the super 7's carriage to stop the swarf from filling the holes up. fun little exercise which I'm quite pleased with the result.

                                Thanks for reading

I have been working on repairing and restoring this Burrell Showmans Engine at our works. It was originally just a working engine, and was converted to a Showmans many years ago.image.jpg .

……One job was to make a new steering drum, with a spiral design to locate the steering chains as they wrapped around it. The one on the engine was just a plain fabricated tube with flanges at each end. I wanted to try and produce one similar to the genuine original cast iron spiral design found on some of these engines.image.jpg.

……So in two stages a total of almost 4 metres of 30mm diameter solid black bar was heated up with the Oxy/Acetylene torch, and steadily wound around a 125mm diameter thick walled steel tube.image.jpg

…….The 30mm bar has a pitch of 31/4 inches, about the same as the genuine item.image.jpg

…….The bar ends have been trimmed and blended in flat, it is quite a weight already, and there is still plenty more to do to it. The spiral bar will be fully welded all the way round.image.jpg

Yes before bending I checked that, then double checked and finally triple checked. Still worried it was correct while bending it, and was then convinced it was the wrong way round when completed.

Thought it was about time I finally sorted this angle plate to fit the Adept shaper. Problem is, I really needed a second angle plate to fix it to while I lengthened the slots bit.

Slight overhang on this job, so I started by taking the excess out with three plunge cuts at each end, then skimmed flat. Not bad to take a 3/4" deep cut with a 1/4" endmill.

I agree with KWIL. Any form of support would be good practice in this set-up. Blocks with some sort of wedge to fill the gap or blocks with a large nut and bolt will substitute for proper machining jacks. If you have 123 blocks with threaded holes a suitable bolt in one of the threaded holes will also work. Lots of ways to do it. of course we are both making the assumption there was nothing there that has been removed for the photo but the swarf looks undisturbed.

I would have added some extra support, except it was solid as a rock anyway. I was only machining the slots closest to the corner, and the angle plate itself is might beefy, which helped!
