Vic, I gave up on wood turning as a regular thing about 25yrs ago, but one line I was doing was Mahogany salad bowls, I used the method of gluing the bowl to a block of wood, with paper in between, and I never had a problem, but I would not have liked a sudden stop, specially while there was a fair bit of wood in the bowl. Smaller boxes, and bowls no trouble.
My wood lathe is still on it's bench, but only fired up to make file handles and the like.
