      Martin,

No strop shown in the manual, which I will post if I can find the effing thing.

I, of course, put said manual in a safe place, so nuff sed!

I did do a photocopy so those are on one of my hard disks, but which one?

Retirement relaxing! Not stopped laughing since reading that.

I Retired early with the intention of getting on with hobbies, some relaxing time, and a general de-stress.

Since then I never seem to have a spare moment, There is much less time for any hobbies and one sort of stress has been replaced by others.

How did I ever manage to fit in a full time job as well?

Having said all that there is no way I would want to return to the previous scheme of things.

          Geoff,

It's probably no more helpful than my previous post

Like you I have several of those safe places and only find them when I have purchased a replacement for whatever was put away 'Safe', and always no replacement then no find. I think that when you retire there is some unknown force that comes into play which reduces the length of the useful day, perhaps its something like 'Dark Time' and related to Dark Energy/Matter.

Does it help keep the tyre wall in its well and possibly lift one wall to ease tyre lever entry? Colin

On tyre changing- Assuming no access to a garage tyre changer. Easiest way to get tyres off the rim is to use an old spade, place on rim/ tyre joint and stand on spade, cracks the seal easily. Putting on tubeless tyres, a rope round the centre and a stick usually works ( Spanish Windless ?)

                  Good replies.

                  V8Eng,

How I ever managed to hold down a full time job and prepare my racing car defies belief now.

                  MichaelG,

                  Thanks for the link.

                  Colin,

You are closer than you realise, just a*se about face.

                  GordonW,

Well worth keeping in mind, provided I manage to remember your method that is.

I will assemble the apparatus and take another photo.

Another photo in this tyre levers saga, this one showing the bits assembled ready to do battle.

Now this should help, but if not then the last one will be with it attached to the wheel/tyre ready for action.

                    Barkers Tyre Levers

With any luck the instructions will be as well, provided noggin plays fair?

                      HI

How about an aid to removing the tyre, once first part of the tyre has been lifted over the rim this is used to walk the tyre off the rim altogether. The knurled section gripping the tyre while the bracket section lifts the bead over the rim; or conversely it puts the tyre on to the wheel by walking it over the rim but I favour the first scenario. Either way it means less messing about by the roadside.

Or perhaps its an archaic tool for removing certain appendages from a bull to convert it to a bullock crying 2.

                      Cheers

                      Martin

                      PS

Gordon  Your Spanish Windlass is exactly the same in principle to the tool I mentioned earlier with a strop and lever but a lot easier to fabricate when one is needed urgently!

Just discovered that our hero went Bankrupt

… I wonder if the design is any good ?

I've not seen the Barker tool before but have used this bead breaker to good effect when punctures were a regular occurrence.pict0121.jpg

                            MichaelG,

Him going belly up in 1905 explains why his implement hadn't become popular.

Cars at that time where expensive, so only bought by the well heeled, who would not I think have sullied themselves in changing a wheel let alone a tyre.

He was 20 years too early with his invention, priced at 26/- per set.

"The Austin Seven the motor for the million" could have saved him.

Geoff – Ordered more ModRock to continue the drawer saga.

                                Well-found, Geoff

Shame it doesn't quote the Patent Number … the ones I found earlier only describe the basic levers.
