Safety glasses/guards

Like most of us I do try to use these when machining, unfortunately being blind in one eye I am finding it difficult to keep these clean and clear so I can see through them, I presume they are made from some sort of plastic which just seem to smear when cleaned anyone got any suggestions of a good cleaning method or a good make of safety glasses or material for guards

A little bit of washing up liquid and a good rinse in warm water and leave to dry with no rubbing,

I clean my plastic lensed glasses and safety goggles as follows- rinse well under a warm tap, a few drips of washing-up liquid gently rubbed over both sides by a finger, rinse very thoroughly under warm water and leave to drip dry. I've been doing this for many years and can't find a better way.

T-cut or plastic polish applied with a soft clean cloth, and polish in straight lines, Water is useless, especially if you live in a hard water area. Also steer clear of isopropyl alcohol based glass cleaners. I have similar problems, and find this works for me!

The material is typically polycarbonate [common trade name = Lexan].

I have found that one of the best washes for this, and any other optics, is a weak solution of "alberto balsam, tea tree tingle" Hair Shampoo … which is available very cheaply in most supermarkets.

I also use it as the wash in my ultrasonic bath.

I pay less than £2.00 a pair for my safety specs from Cromwell and usually buy 10 at a time. They have a lanyard to hang round your neck. I haven't bought any for some time now as I try to take good care of them.

These are my rules:-

1) Never put them on a bench. Always hang them by the lanyard.

2) Never rub the "glass" with fingers or rags.

3) If they need cleaning always use warm soapy water with minimal rubbing, Rinse and leave to dry or use compressed air if in a hurry.

4) When they get scruffy throw them in the bin.

All very obvious but it took a long time before I realised that I needed to be very strict about this.

Having looked through some very murky safety specs I often wonder how many accidents are caused by people who can't see what they are doing.

Screwfix list 92 versions but these are almost given away with a packet of cornflakes. There are some specs style, ie lughooks for the same price. no lanyard but they can sit on your forehead and the plastic frame overlaps the 'glass' so provides some protection when placed on a clean bench.

Thanks gents–a few things to try there, I have a couple of specs and I'm afraid they get put down wherever I am working, David has a good point about that-I'll have to be more careful- I do like the hair shampoo method but will try the washing up liquid first ( mainly cus I ain't got much hair )

I always use that type as it fits over my specs, but they do leave a Klingon mark on your forehead…

I have a couple of pairs of the plastic over-glasses for use when machining/tapping etc and these have become quite scratched and scuffed over time. I was thinking of maybe washing them with soapy water and then trying a protective coat of Klear (Future) polish to add a more resistant surface like the kit modellers do with aircraft canopies. But I'm not sure if this would alter the properties and effectiveness of the glasses.

i use the same cleaner that is for the visor on my crash helmet it comes in a small spray bottle , available from any good motorcycle shop or e,bay designed to clean off all the dead flies and assorted road muck and dries with no smears , it also gets of oil from my old vintage bikes,i was pleased when i tried it in the workshop, so one bottle does two jobs , will

Using an overall face mask allows you to use ordinary specs so they don,t get dirty. Clean by dipping in soapy water and rinse off under the tap.

The best I have found for all my:

~ car and ATV plastic (polycarbonate) front and rear light lenses

~ ATV and motorcycle windscreens

~safety glasses, face shields and goggles

I use "Pledge" furniture polish for superb cleaning and crystal clear finish. Spray on and buff out with a microfiber cloth. Tip passed to me by a motocross enthusiast a few years back.

Seems I should take more care of them, I have previously used hot water instead of warm which can leave glasses misty its the same with my bird feeders, tried the warm/washing up liquid/air dry method and they are better but I shall have to get new ones as they are well scratched

Hi Mick. I have been using a face mask / safety visor as suggested by David above. It works very well as my glasses are not interfered with and it is comfortable to wear. It is also very easy to pop on and off. Only downside is that I like Homer Simpson in his nuclear power station!

The main thing to remember is that all dust, and any potential scratchy stuff, must be washed off before any polishing is attempted. Now what I need is something that really will clean car windscreens, tried all available commercial products.

To quote from my aircraft owners manual, use plenty of water and a mild soap, rub the wet plastic with your hands, rinse, and dry off with a clean damp chamois, using it dry will cause a build up of static electricity, attracting dust, it will also cause scratches. Don't use hydrocarbons.

It is the coloured ink, they treat the paper to make it print better. Use a paper that is printed with black only ink if you can find one these days. I found an old newspaper today from 1993 before they were doing the colour print. Looks like I will be keeping it for special occasions then. Any of the really cheap dish wash liquids work well for cleaning the plastic glasses. The secret is not to rub or smear the dust/dirt/grit into the plastic and then end up scratching them. I have prescription safety glasses, and they are not too bad after 3 years. My eyes will have changed before they get too damaged and need replacing. The secret is to keep them clean, so keep your head away from coolant mist oil splashes etc, all the things that make them go grubby. I always place mine down, upside down on the bench in a clean place, so the lenses can not be scratched or the glasses can't roll over across the lens face.

I find that almost all safety glasses tend to steam up eventually as the closer they fit the poorer the ventilation.

I have bought a super safety shield from ARC that can be adjusted to any position , offers very wide area of protection and is mounted on a strong magnetic foot. The only fault I found was that some genius had fitted it with a clip for attaching a drawing. Now if a drawing is attached it totally obscures the view through the screen. It only take a minute or so to remove it. I also changed the adjusting knob for a Kipp type handle. I clean it with some foamy stuff sold for cleaning computer screens just spray a little on and them wipe off with a tissue.

I have no connection with ARC other than as a very satisfied customer.
