      Danni,

I have used these outfits for materials in the past and been satisfied with service and price

      For general materials

      http://www.m-machine-metals.co.uk

For gauge plate & silver steel

      https://www.groundflatstock.com/Shop/w12510-o1-gfs/metric-precision-ground-flat-stock-500mm

      https://www.coventry-grinders.co.uk/product-category/key-steel/

You will need a muffle furnace to HT the gauge plate and oil quench

        Thanks John

There’s some helpful info on those sites – you don’t get that on eBay.

I think for the lengths I’m looking for (3″ pieces), there will be no real difference in price. Unless it’s WYS, of course.

I have bought longer pieces (0.5m) of bar in the past, and it doesn’t get used.

        cheers

Danni, You will often find its more economic to buy standard lengths than cut too size, most suppliers have a cutting charge anywhere from around £2/3 & more per cut !

Gauge plate is sold in 18″ lengths — from the year dot !  as SS is 13″

If you have to buy more of a material mark the surplus with a colour code so you know what it is for future use — you will use it over time, material cost is usually the lowest cost of anything you make.

Look around Manchester there will certainly be steel suppliers or users you can maybe collect from ?

Oooops, sorry Danni, forgot to answer your question on the size of the vee grooves.

They are 45 degree slots, 1/4” on the working face of the jaw.

              Cheers Peter

I’ve been a bit busy to make these, so I wasn’t waiting on the detail.

Anyway, I have all the details and materials now for the machining, anyway. Then fire bricks and poor-man’s surface grinder. I just need to prioritise it.

                cheers
