      My first question since joining.

Have recently inherited my Dad's old hobby lathe, The other day I decided to try it out and found that the three jaw chuck appears to have end float causing the chuck to move left to right when running.

I don't think this is a good thing, could some please shed light on the situation

How much end float? A thou, or 100 thou? Is the chuck fully tightened on the spindle nose (it probably is because it tightens when the lathe starts)?

If the amount of float is small then probably the spindle needs careful adjustment – see the manual or various posts on here.

You would need to be specific on the actual model. A serial No would be good as you can pinpoint the year too. The 7 early model had half white metal shell bearings. The later models had 2 rear opposing ball races & a tapered bronze cone behind the chuck. Both have a different way of adjustment.
