I would like to make a scale model car during the winter months and am trying to locate authentic wire wheels for the model. Will I have to make these myself or does anyone know where I can buy them . Any searches on Google seem to bring up the real thing and not model wheels !!

Scale is not decided yet, but would probaly be around 12th scale. If suitable wheels could be found, then I will work the scale to the wheel size.

      Mike.

          Hi Mike,

I don't know of a source of these wheels commercially but the bible for this kind of work is Gerald Wingroves book – The Complete Car Modeller 2. It chronicles the build of his model of a Buggatti Royale. He describes how to make wire wheels, individual tyres and how to form complex body parts in copper and brass. It's worth getting in my opinion. The books 1 and 2 are usually available from libraries on inter-library loan if not in your local.

Here's a couple of scans from the book. He models all parts of the car accurately as far as possible including the engines external features to exact scale.

There are quite a few about, but not cheap, then again the real Borriani wheels are expensive.

Plenty more hits on google if you search "1/12 scale wire wheels"

Made these a few years ago for a model car – not exactly to scale for various reasons, but that is mainly a question of patience – about one day apiece to make – I don't consider buying things like this to be model engineering. Buying the tools is one thing, but buying the bits? No thanks.

Was a good article a few years ago about building a model MG – detailed description of how to make wire wheel models, tyres, etc, including inforamtion on spoke layout, and material sources.

The Bugatti man is a genius !! Thank's for the details of that site.

Now this is what I call scale modelling. I believe that his models actually run as well as looking perfect..

                Is that correct?

                Mike.

                  Hi Mike,

That would be very nice but unfortunately they are not working models, at least as far as the engines are concerned.

                  Regards

                  Terry
