I have 2 milling m/c's + a 6"shaper, I have a 100 mm wide vice which I use a lot on the mills and have decided to buy another vice but can't decide on another 100mm vice or an 80mm one which would be better to use on the shaper. The 100mm looks a bit ungainly on the shaper but the extra capacity of the larger vice is tempting, what would you do?

Normally I would pick the bigger one. What shaper do you have?

A shaper can usually take some hefty roughing cuts and easily deals with tough jobs a lathe would hate, hence the bigger the better in most circumstances

You can also make your own vices on a shaper because they excel at flat surfaces, a solid steel vice can last a lifetime

The shaper is home made with a 7" × 5" table, Iam just fitting the slides to it, there will be a support fitted to outer end of table so should be pretty stiff, the mills are horizontal Adcock/Shipley and a Warco WM14 if the vice was fitted to one I would often need to fit it on the other which can be a pain,I suppose ideally I couuld buy 2 more vices but cost is a consideration

                  .

Have a nosey at the excellent range of milling vices of various sizes stocked by ARC Eurotrade. IMHO very nice for the money.

At the prices they are not worth bothering constructing your own unless it's for the personal satisfaction of "I made that" which by default a lot of members here can relate to. smiley
