      I’ve encountered those as well.
I flatly refuse to use them.

Smart and Brown, Lucky you, Wolfie

This should be more than adequate for machining the bores in the dividing head if you wish to bypass the boring head. I assume though that you have a largish faceplate for the lathe.

If you are not experienced in using the faceplate (most lathe users hate the process) do ensure that the part is very adequately secured and the assembly is sufficiently balanced before switching on. Do also turn the machine by hand first to ensure that nothing will foul up.

If you are hesitant you may find the following helpful.

For any one wishing to bypass the boring head but only having a smaller lathe the body could be made in two parts. The upper part could then be bored whilst held in the four jaw. On assembly, the two parts could be held together with cap screw through clearance holes in the lower part and into tapped holes in the upper.

Also Wolfie, may I add, as you are finding my project based book helpful you may like to consider my latest book in the WSP series, number 49 “The Milling Machine, and accessories, Choosing and Using” This is intended to complement the project based book being what I call a learn by reading book, rather than learn by doing. It covers from the very basic and up to such items as, rotary tables, boring and dividing heads. It also covers the actual metal removing process in some detail.

Since having prepared the above, but delayed in posting it, I have noticed David Haynes comments.

I am sorry David that the latest book has not the content that you were expecting. However, the publisher likes duplication between publications to be kept to a minimum as purchasers understandably complain if they obtain a book only to find that much of its content is a duplication of one they already have.

Thanks Harold, I didn’t want my comment to come across as a complaint and I understand the situation. I will buy the earlier book!

Sorry David, I did not see it as a complaint only that you had misunderstood what the purpose of the book was.

Can I ask you to contact me via the correspondence page of my web site befor purchasing the book
