I am looking to buy a couple of micrometers one being a 2-3" and the other 3-4 these are going to be for occasional use unlike the ones I already have which are a mix of M & W, Starrett and Mitutoyo, these I do use on a regular basis.

Any thought on the Dasgua (Chronos) ones or even the new look M&W ones with the blue plastic looking bits on them. Any others which can be recommended please.

I don't need to know the ins and outs (Of a dogs rear end) of them just are they any good and accurate

My preference is for used but good condition M&W off Fleabay. Haven't had a bad one yet, Starrett seem to have reached cult status and prices, something like Myford Super 7s, Used Mitutoyo are good too but the MnW seem to be the unloved stepchild that are better value for money.

No idea about the new ones. They have that suspicious made in China look about them, and their price tag. You get what you pay for with new stuff.

If you have a set of gauge blocks you can check any micrometer against your target dimension and, if required, adjust it to be right at that point. For occasionally used micrometers this would mean even poor quality ones will do what you need.

Are the ones you are looking at supplied with a setting pin? If you have a few setting pins for different range micrometers they can be used to check the start and finish on a micrometer to give you confidence in the readings they give.

My 'best' digital caliper is a Dasqua and it's definitely a cut above the cheaper models I use for rough work. Holds zero better and feels smoother. Dasqua seem to be aiming at the upper-mid-range market: neither expensive or cheap. Assuming it's as well made as my caliper I'd certainly risk a Dasqua micrometer.

Being 'Made in China' doesn't put me off. Just avoid buying 'too cheap' products wherever they come from.

Just a note to SOD. OP is asking about micrometers not calipers.

I have some with 'blue plastic bits' on, but I think they came from Chester or Chronos?

They work perfectly well but the slots on the battery caps have got a bit chewed up over the years.

There are some very lightly used and carefully kept bargains on eBay of the big named makers and this is where I have purchased most of my collection. I have over the years bought digital versions in addition but I do overall prefer the purely mechanical version. Dasqua look to be quite nicely made but a picture doesn’t tell the whole story. I think I would test the water and buy one and see what it’s like before committing to a selection. The prices are pretty reasonable if you have to put the purchase down to experience.

I would just like to thank all members that helped me with this post and also to those that have offered me some micrometers for a fair price.

I am now sorted for those sizes that I mentioned in my opening post. This goes to show that members of the forum are a great bunch not only helping with information but also helping me sort out what I need which was not my intent when I started this thread.

For the amount of time I will use these sizes buying second hand does seem to be the way to go but if needed I would have brought new.
