I'm making a Quorn type grinder (actually a Bonelle) and cannot find one vital piece of information: How much lubricant do you need in the spindle?
The spindle will be the same as Prof. Chaddocks design for the Quorn. I have the Quorn book and as much other information form both the web and ME/MEW back issues but this is the one thing that is not mentioned (or I simply can't see it for looking!).

I assume oil is introduced via the 2ba hole about half way along the spindle housing but how much? One drop? A teaspoon full? or enough to flood out of both ends via the bearing caps? Is there a builder or owner out there who can guide me. Thanks.

I built my Quorn many years ago and think the book does mention something about lubrication if my memory serves me correctly. I think it needs a small amount of oil and to be honest I think I just put a little oil on the bearings during assembly and have never added any since over the last twenty years or so (perhaps I should ).

Thanks. Every twenty years it is – should be around long enough for the first re-oiling but i'd have to be well over 100 to make it to the second!! emotion

There was an article in MEW # 62 "Compendium of the Quorn" pg 20,21 that covered the amount of oil to use in the spindle, including the calculations to determine the volume of oil required. This is what I used when I made my spindle and it has been perfectly satisfactory.  If you can't find the article send me a PM.

Lots of heavy boxes needed to be moved but I now have those issues of MEW (MEW 62 and 63)- Thank you that is about the most comprehensive review of the Quorn and all the associated articles and literature that I have seen. Not sure how i missed it when searching but I did! Thank you John.

Further to my last, using the method in the article I calculated that the quantity of oil that I needed was 2.2cc. When I built my spindle I used a stack of 4 Belleville springs instead of the coil springs and spring box that Chaddock used, so if made to the original drawings the quantity would probably be slightly different. Glad I could be of some help.

I lubricated my Quorn spindle bearings with Kluber Iso Flex Super Tel. If it’s good enough for a Deckel pantograph spindle, Deckel mill spindle, and Aciera mill spindle, it’s good enough for a Quorn. The speed is well within acceptable range for this grease. I think there’s less risk of contamination using grease, because one packing should last a decade.
