I saw this homemade lathe on Ebay. The owner certainly didn't skimp on the paint!

          Hi,

This has been up for a while now. It started off at a much higher price, possibly £200.00. It has been reduced over the weeks but strangely no one has bought it. smile p

I don't think it's strange. It probably is only any use for wood.

I don't know about the probability of being only any use for wood. Most of it appears to be made of wood and a bit of Meccano for good measure ! I'm not sure it would stand up turning wood unless it was balsa or similar. I reckon at £100 it will still be there for a long time.

It doesn't seem likely that a long time engineer would've built this with the primary purpose of turning being in mind, He's got a drill chuck on it with carborundum grinding bit in there, there isn't a lot of movement on the slide. I think there's a clue there.

It could be 'a bit of modern machine art'…….cheeky

The drill chuck looks as though its attached to an old drill gearbox body, such as a B & D…..which in turn is driven by the motor…..

It looks like it was made to do some specialist grinding job to me, the 'tailstock' is actually a pusher to move the slide past the grinding wheel.

JR is right. Would you pay that much for a black and decker drill?

A piece of advanced "bodgerie" I think – I particularly like the purple paint – it would serve as a great ornament/ door stop almost anywhere……..on the other hand a brick would serve the same purpose and maybe have greater aesthetic appeal!

A 'one off' speciality job methinks.

I saw it weeks ago too.

'Owned by a time served engineer'. Hmmm, what did he serve – 20 years in Wormwood Scrubs for impersonating an engineer?! wink 2

A lot of criticism from people who have no idea of what it is supposed to do, and whether it does it or not.

And another thread complains about John Stevenson!

The motor would be worth a few pounds but as Robbo points out, we dont know what its for so cant comment on its suitability. Might make selling it difficult though.

I deliberately did not comment on its suitability for anything ( far be it for me to comment on other peoples ability), although I do think that it has limited use. The main thing that I noticed was how thick the paint is! (look at picture 7)

Looking at the other items being sold, for the elderly relative , (a seamstress ? ) it could be for making wooden bobbins , and he was a civil engineer . He had a mk2 1600e cortina , and had some paint left over in the shed . Good detective me laugh
