        Hi

I have the chance to pickup a little Jones & Shipman 540 surface grinder, it appears to be an older model of 1950's vintage . It appears to be in good shape, and runs smoothly . It has the power up/down option fitted .

Are there any potential problems to look out for ? Thanks

If you can see it under power listen carefully to the wheel head, it should be very quiet. Head rebuild is circa £2000. Let it run for 30/40 mins to see if it gets hot. Lift the rear belt cover and check the belt, it should be a felt backed one on an older machine. The later (yellow) poly belts are not kind to the older oil filled heads. If any spare wheel arbours are with it have them as they are costly and having a selection means you can leave wheels mounted up. If it has not run for a while expect the hydraulics for table travel to be sluggish until warm. Budget for an oil change. Ask if the transportation frame is still with it to make moving easier. Unless really abused they are bomb proof.

Warning on the cross feed handle, with the auto feed mechanism there is a nipple which looks like a grease nipple,it is an oil nipple,do NOT use grease,or it will stiffen up the internal mechanism and the auto feed will not work. A Jones and Shipman service engineer who I met some years ago said they were often called out following complaints of stiff or non working feed. The solution if grease has been used is to dismantle and wash out,Be careful to note the position of the banana shaped bronze casting which operates the ratchet feed, replace it the wrong way round and it only feeds in one direction, I have a nice 540P (power up and down) but I cannot get a really good finish yet I used a few of these in my working days and got the usual excellent results as its one of the best tolroom grinders, I put my poorer results down to using a phase converter as I get similar finish problems with my larger Colchester.
