      .

      Just a general question really.

Has anyone considered making one and then thought better of it, or has anyone made one.?

Try the gas turbine builders group

I was going to have a go using a compressor from a Turbocharger from an EMD Deisel but given that it was about 10" diameter I think it would have resulted in something, had it been successful, with so much power that the test bench would have become airborne as soon as it started.

There are some good books on the subject and as Mike says, log into the GTBA website and you should find plenty of good ideas and designs there.

No, but I did make a Brauner pulse jet (plan in the Aeromodeller Mag in the late 50`s) when I was an apprentice. We fired it up outside the training centre one lunchtime ye gods was it noisy. Quickly shut it down as it was noisier than the Seahawk (RR Nene) we had been running up earlier. Even the MoD plods came looking for the source of the noise!

Still got the plans but not the engine some b*****d nicked it.

                  It looks simple.

                  It isn,t!

J Hill and friends are up there with Whittle and Hooker in my opinion.

There as a article in ME a few years back by a German who's name starts with S, his engine used centrifugal compressor made of ply wood.

The Christchurch model aircraft club had a fly in at there air strip over the past week end, and a number of gas turbine aircraft took part. This is a photo from last year's meet.

I built this hybrid Shreckling / KJ 66 engine around 2001 ,some photos
in the album "Turbine" uses a Shreckling type aluminium compressor
                      wheel (2014 T6) and a 718 inconel turbine wheel.Starts and runs
very easily , runs at 100 K at about 630 deg c EGT ,thrust is low by
modern standards at about 6 lb .Have accidentially run to 140 K
                      overfueling and still survived.Uses standard 8 x 22 ballraces.
Some useful download plans can be seen here from Gerald Rutten

                      members.tele2.nl/geraldensuzanne/turbines.htm‎

Using the same case size as the Shreckling engine he is getting
                      about 40 lb thrust.
These engines are no more difficult to build than anything else,
they do need accuracy ,concentricity ,and balance.

I am always impressed by some of the special tools made by turbine builders, especially the tiny spot-welders used for stainless steel and the balancing rigs.

If anyone (John?) fancies writing up some of these tools… let me know!
