I was going to post a random picture in to see if I was having the same problems as others have documented in a current thread. I came on these pictures and remembered that I never got a definitive answer to this question – On this Tangye engine at the Black Country Museum the governor appears to be fitted to the exhaust. Is this a mistake? Does this engine have inside admission (highly unlikely)? Is there a reason?

        Tangye stationary engine

        Steam chest

        Look carefully

You'll see it's also made in Brum, not the Black Country!

It would make a nice model, though, much in common with teh 10V, but more delicate.

P.S. all photos inserted without problems, but the cursor now returns to top left afterwards, instead of after the picture, which is a small irritation.

          Hi Neil ,

No way of telling for sure without taking engine to bits but a common arrangement on Tangye engines was the four port portface .

Three ports to work in the normal manner with slide valve and a fourth port – always open – was cored back through the cylinder block itself to the connection which admitted the high pressure steam .

Advantage of this arrangement – apart from simplicity – was that the steam chest and cover could be removed for maintenance without disturbing the steam connection .

          Regards ,

That would seem a reasonable explanation, except that why would the exhaust be on the steam chest? I'd expect them to be on opposite sides of the cylinder if that was the case.

I can't find anything about this arrangement with google, but some of these Tangye engines appear to have similarly palaced inlet and outlet pipes. Perhaps the exhaust was also running down a cored hole in the side of the steam chest, I can see how this makes attaching the exhaust easier in a horizontal engine, but I'm sure Mr Churchward would have fretted about such serpentine passages!
