      Hello

Can anyone enlighten me as to how the sprung C clip is put on to the leadscrew shaft under the clutch dog let alone how to get it off again?

I took this Hobbymatt MD65 apart to restore and repaint only it sat in a box for a few years and although i have had no other problems putting the rest of it back together, i cannot recal how i took the C clip out as it cannot be seen under the dog mechanisum and there is no room to get a tool in there,

It has sat there in bits for about 4 months can anyone help

      yours sincerily Tim

Hi T Bracey, don't know if you have resolved your issue with the C clip, refered to a 12 X 1 snap ring in operating and maintenance manual, but the easiest way to get it back in is to use a thin tube. A piece of domestic 15mm copper pipe with a cut down it's length as the outside diameter is to big, will do fine, just put the snap ring on the end of the leadscrew and push it up with the tube until it snaps into place, hence the term snap ring.

            Hello Nicholas

            Thank you for your reply,

and for your inspired method of getting C clip in place,

but my main problem is i will need to get it back off at some time soon, to do some other stuff,

i cannot understand why i cannot remember how i got it off in the first place,

as if it was difficult i would have remembered?

Hi Tim, yes it's a bit of a fiddley job and the best way I've found is to line the gap in the snap ring with one of the dog gaps and then using a small watch makers flat blade screwdriver into the snap ring gap and lever one end out of the groove.

              img_0004 (1024x768).jpg

You then have to chase it round the shaft, turning the dog as you go.

              img_0005 (1024x768).jpg

When you get to about half way round the shaft, you should be able to get a larger watch makers screwdriver behind the snap ring and pop it out, but keep the smaller screwdriver behind the snap ring while you are poping it out with the larger one, otherwise it's likely to snap back in.

It may well take two or three attempts, because it is a bit of a fiddley proceedure and you could do with three hands.

These http://www.toolstation.com/shop/Hand+Tools/d10/Screwdrivers/sd80/Jewellers+Screwdriver+Set/p12357 are typical types of screwdrivers that I use, which are fairly inexpensive and are available from various retailers.

              Regards Nick.

                Thanks once again Nick

I thought i had put something together wrong, or there was a easy way i was missing, but it seems it is just possibly a bit of bad design, I shall have to figure it out, thanks again,PS

I did change the left / right switch mechanisum I re designed it out of hard flexible plastic so as it clips into place much easier, the problem with Hobbymatt was not the skill of the engineers but the lack of parts or supplys in west germany at that time?

                Thanks Tim
