      Hello,

I’m very new to machining, and I recently bought a used Hobbymat MD65 lathe. It’s in good condition, but since it’s had multiple owners, the change gears and I think the change gear bush are missing.

I’m trying to set up threading for a 1.5 mm pitch. The lathe chart calls for (W/75, Z1/50, Z2/60, L/60). I’ve set the leadscrew gear to 60, but with Z1 and Z2 I can’t seem to get them to work. I think they’re supposed to go side-by-side; however, the original piece on the apron’s pin has one end where a gear attaches, and the other side has a white, roughly 20-tooth gear that doesn’t come off.

I think I might be missing this piece (change gear bushing):

It seems the two gears attach side-by-side and then slide onto the apron’s pin.

Can anyone confirm this or tell me where I can find a replacement part? Thanks.

I do not own, nor have I ever owned, a Hobbymat lathe, but the gear set-up procedure is pretty much the same across all small lathes.

I assume that you have a copy of the Hobbymat manual?  If not you can download one from the internet for free or PM me your email address and I’ll send you a copy.

The gear layout page shows no sign of the part that you show above,as far as I can see,  The gears that you quote are in accordance with the chart printed just below this (partial screen-grab)

As you correctly say, Z1 and Z2 are keyed together on the idler stud.  Perhaps these two gears fit on the mystery object in your photo, which is, I think, part 6/26 in the right-hand shot?  I believe that there are users of Hobbymat lathes on here who can give you the definitive answer but this is my take on it.

Is there any way you can post a picture of your current gear-train set-up? ..I mean what bits you have on the slotted bar the gears go on.. ..not sure I understand the bit about ‘the other side has a white 20 tooth gear on it..

Sussed it – the 20tooth gear is for the lowest fine-feed and it’s pressed onto it’s own dedicated bush – so as you correctly thought, you need the other bush to swap onto the stud instead of the 20T one.

Probably not worth making one unless you get really stuck, ask if you want the dimensions.

Hi ionnyboy 11, the one you have is this one, which is what Diogenes has described.

The one you need is the one that Diogenes has linked to at Heritage-Lathes, which you will need for all the screwcutting settings.

Grab it while you can, it really will be as shown in the photo, as I’ve had a few things from them myself. You could probably make one, but for the money they are asking, I don’t think it is worth the hassle of making one.

                Regards Nick.

The small one with 20 tooth is just because, obviously, the 20 is too small to fit on the bush!
The missing part is super trivial. It takes virtually no strain and can be made of hard cheese almost. Well any bit of plastic and the dimensions you can get from the other gears to fit on it and the stud it fits on. A bit of lollypop stick will do as the key. If you have or know someone with a 3D printer then print some, maybe some with one gear (module 1) built in.
You may be also missing the next smallest gear as it is so thin it breaks at the keyway, as does the 20.

I have a Bambu Lab 3D printer. If you send me the drawing of the piece, I can print it for you.
