Grinder stone types

Just been to a friend of mine to use his bench grinder. (one was on my shopping list)

Anyway. He had a nice spare 6" one and has kindly donated it to 'the cause'.!

What are the type of stones I need for sharpening lathe tools, and are they different types for HSS and tungsten.?

Hi Nick.

Aluminium oxide ( ‘grey’ ) for HSS and silicon carbide ( ‘green’) for tungsten carbide.

Arc Euro Trade do a variety of sizes and grades.

I would seriously recomend making some kind of tool rest ( Harold Hall details one on his website ). Off hand grinding is difficult to get the right angles and wastes valuable tool steel in the attempt !

As W says Grey for HHS Green for Tungsten . Please note before fitting any grinding wheel New or second hand
Give it a tap to see if it rings. If it dont it will be cracked . also the fitted washer should not be a tiny one it may have been said before on a off hand grinder dont leave a large gap between the wheel & the rest . But you already know that !!!!

Hold the wheel with your finger through the hole, and tap it lightly with a bit of wood, screw driver, hammer handle, or what ever. THERE MUST BE soft paper discs on each side, under the clamping discs, I have noted that one large retailer in NZ sells grinder wheels without the paper washers, any complaints that I have made have been shrugged off. Not the place I would be buying from. The clamping washers should be about 1/3 the wheel diameter, a lot of them are just pressed out of 3 mm steel, and usually a bit on the small size. Ian S C
