My 4" traction engine calls for 1/4" rivets for the spokes to wheel flange joints. These are a bit big for the tackle I have, its not that my hammers are not big enough, I just don't have anything strong enough to support a dolly to work against.

I thought that fitting nuts partially domed to threaded rivets would work for me, all I have to do is tighten them up and carefully sand any extra thread off and it would look ok when painted.

I made a dolly for the lathe and threaded it, as the nuts need to go right up to the shoulder on the dolly I had to undercut the thread. A while ago I bought a 1/16" ish wide parting off tool from eBay. I set it up,in the lathe and off I go, or rather off goes the tool. It cut a little then started to push off to one side. On inspection it's nearly a blade width out of square with the face of my lathe chuck. I took it out and looked at it and the whole body groove where the tool fits is miles out. Good job it was cheap as it's now in the bin, minus the blade.

Moral being if it's cheap then it's become expensive because now I have to pay the correct sum to get a good one. 👍

Never too old to learn 👴🏻

You might regret NOT getting a rear tool-post. Parting off changed my turning from one of those activities where I clenched my buttocks every time I did it to what is now a pleasure.

Is the parting blade tapered? Is it that the holder taper doesn't match?

Rear tool post, clenched buttocks and pleasure in the same post. I had to reread that!

Rear tool post for parting is the way to go, I made one earlier this year and wish I had done it years ago.

On reflection, a comma or two may have helped the way that read. laugh
