One final thought on restoring that damaged shaft, particularly as you say you don't know how it happened, would be to let in the gear rod section that John Stephenson suggested with a shear pin coupling at the end that matters; just in case it happens again.
When I worked locally for an agricultual engineers, the BOKO verical mill tried to plunge cut the hardened table while the operator was in the office answering the phone. OK, it shouldn't have happened, but you know how it is, the job was on auto. We found out afterwards that the 'sealed' electrical terminal box on the control apron along the front of the table was full of coolant and had switched on the down feed.
I'm not saying that sort of thing happened in your case, but sometimes unexpected events of that kind occur and a shear pin is an easily replaced safety component in a drive system
