Firefly article in model engineer

Hi All , I bought Vol 208 (number 4432) of model engineer and am interested in the Firefly I/C Engine. I see this is part 2 and was wondering if i have missed any drawings or critical info in part 1 ?

No you have not missed any drawings, The first part was just a basic introduction by the engines designer about why and how he went about the design, his down to earth approach to machining and fits which I agree with and a bit about how the engine ran and the drawings proved by others.

I raised a question about the reference to the "30mm hole" that is mentioned in the text which actually relates to the 28.2mm bore, have a look at the following post for more details. I have also taken a lot of photos of my progress so far on this engine which you can see in my album.

Hi Jason B , Thanks for your reply , i've already had a look at your very helpful photo's.

I am a beginner and have succesfully made a couple of Elmers engines but fancied an i/c engine so when this came up i thought i'd give it a go but definitley need guidance.

Always a worry when there's a possibility of confusion over the drawings

Don't fancy doing a full detailed build thread for the absolute beginner do ya

Hi Chris,

If you wish to have a look, the drawings of the engine are here. I have just prepared my blank for the crankcase and am about to machine it. It is not a difficult process if you are careful and think it through. The instructions in the article are, as Jason says, down to earth and easy yo follow. It is my first i.c. engine also as I have always concentrated on steam before so I too will enjoy the experience.

Terryd – Many thanks , i'm going to print off and laminate those drawings and have a good look before starting.Think this will be my next project after i complete my current which is Elmers #46 Beam engine.By that time you'll be well ahead of me so might be asking a few questions if thats ok ?

The 30mm thing in the text had me scratching my head for ages trying to work out which way on he had it in the lathe
