Does anyone know where I can source a Myford 34t change gear?

Hi,

I'm needing a 33t and 34t change gear to allow for metric screw cutting.

The 33t seems readily available at a bargain £10 however the 34T I Can't seem to find anywhere.

If anyone has maybe purchased one before or may know of a link it would be appreciated.

Got mine at the Fosse from Myford/RDG. They had loads

I contacted RDG via their website on January 30th to enquire when they would have the 34t back in stock and got the following response:

"Thank you for the email we are out of stock for at least 8 weeks sorry but they will go straight back on the web site once in stock."

They haven't yet appeared, so you might want to try asking them as well, you can contact them here.

Put a WANTED ad on this site. I got several Myford gears to complete my set that way.

I asked RDG about availability of this gear on the 26th March & was told "around 6 weeks" – so possibly mid May, though if a 30th January enquiry suggested "at least 8 weeks" maybe mid June ?

I had a look around the usual secondhand suppliers yesterday & couldn't find one. I have a "commission" to make a wood lathe chuck adapter for one of my wife's colleagues that has 3 and 3.5mm pitch threads, so both gears required.

No of teeth plus 2 all divided by DP

(34 + 2) / 20 = 1.8"

Use a 14.5pa cutter

Like most other off the shelf gears HPC and Daval do 20pa not 14.5pa.

What Jason didn't add was that you need a # 4 cutter to make that gear. If you have the equipment you can borrow mine and send it back when you are done. It is a commercial size which needs a 1 inch diameter arbour.

If that is helpful send me an email with your contact details and I will make sure it is sharp before sending

The same offer applies to Karl Challis if you are able to use it

I've cut my own with off the shelf cutters, presumably the pressure angle for those didn't match either.
But they work perfectly well and since model engineers are so blase about variation metric pitches…….. 😀

Depends who's shelf the cutters came off, quite a few 14.5 pa cutters about particularly old second hand ones.

Curious as to the reason the particular 34T is so hard to get? Is it a really uncommon size?

Try finding a 48 tooth gear. They are even more difficult to get hold of !

48T is not part of the normal set. What is it required for on the Myford?

Hi I am looking for a bit of info relating to a Aud Boxford lathe I am renovating, while stripping I damaged the left hand threaded screw in the centre of the clutch knob I think that is what it's called I need to know the size and thread please .

33 and 34T were never part of the Myford change wheel set. All conceivable threads were available by other combinations. Other correspondents have commented in the past that the new Myford owners had no conception of what they could be used for but they do seem to have cottoned on to the demand. I wonder if John Stevenson made a batch for them, which have since run out. It is also worth bearing in mind that sales of these "cheat" gears would detract from sales of the official Myford metric conversion set.

At the risk of sounding rather stuffy, the "cheat" gears as you put it do save a lot of time and leave the fine feed arrangement that is so prized still available, a facility that is lost by mounting up the pukka Myford metric gearing conversion set.

I don't really see what is so dreadful about having an simpler and much cheaper alternative, I'm sure there is room for all in the sales area of these additional components in one form or another. The results in either case are still approximations, some are very close to being mathematically correct and quite good enough for all but the most demanding needs

I'll let you into a secret, JS made the 33 and 34 out of the same blank so that you could swap them out without having to move the centres. They was a batch made but I don't know where they went.

I've extolled the virtue of the 33 and 34 tooth gears on this forum many times. My use of the word "cheat" (note the inverted commas) was to emphasise Myford's possible reluctance to provide them – neither are currently available.

If you have a 3D printer you could download the file for a Myford 34 tooth gear from Thingverse here. I printed a gear for my Atlas about a year ago just to see if it would work. I've been using it ever since in the fine feed set-up as it reduces the noise.
