I think with a displacement lubricator oil delivery depends on steam pressure – OK for a more or less constant speed stationary engine, but perhaps not ideal for a loco that keeps stopping and starting.
I think that for loco use a sight feed is added to the basic displacement lubricator so you can monitor flow, and I think it may be linked up to the lubricator in some way. I suspect it could end up more complicated than a pump.
