displacement lubricator on 5″ loco

Im thinking of a simple lubricator for my 5" – Ive used them on stationary engines fine, but would it work on a loco if I take the feed from the valve chest? I cant access the steam in pipe easily.

Hi Fizzy,

I think with a displacement lubricator oil delivery depends on steam pressure – OK for a more or less constant speed stationary engine, but perhaps not ideal for a loco that keeps stopping and starting.

I think that for loco use a sight feed is added to the basic displacement lubricator so you can monitor flow, and I think it may be linked up to the lubricator in some way. I suspect it could end up more complicated than a pump.

Hi Fizzy ,

Displacement lubricators can be mounted on valve chest easily and will work perfectly – nothing different to mounting them on valve chest of a Stuart no 10 .

Don't make them complicated ones though – follow what was done on simpler industrial locomotives which just had a simple oil pot dislacement lubricator with basic means of filling and draining .
