I purchased a second hand Dart in August 2014 with the intention of tidying it up a bit. Here's the story in 6 minutes.

Where possible I retained as many original parts as I could

Congratulations Pete, looks like more than a 6-minute job to me!

Well done, with an extra minute you could have made a NEW one from scratch!

Thanks Neil – yes there's a few hours in there but I don't think many of us do timesheets

              Kwil –

That had crossed my mind from time to time. I had done a similar job with a Simplex and that didn't require anywhere near as much work to get it running.

The boiler firebox had been calked with soft solder so that was scrapped before I offered to buy the loco.

I started with the expansion links and it grew from there. Don Ashton pitched in with the offer a redesigned valve gear. That meant I really needed to know where everything was located. That resulted in the "Frame Mapping" article I did in ME 4507 and 4509.

With up to 80 thou errors in the frame drilling meant a new motion plate and lifting link trunions. Opening the cylinders, another re-make. The cranks were all loose so I knew they needed re-making and Dons design defined the lead on the eccentrics so they were pinned in place, no grub screws. So everything between the frames is new.

The plate work is OK but not excellent. It's good enough to run with to shake down the loco but could well be replaced with a laser cut set of plates at a later date.

              Pete

I thought that process looked familiar
