Interesting methods Neil and Les for skimming the shaft. I remember thinking it was a job that had to be done to ensure the wheel ran true, with my first idea being to dismantle the motor so as I could just work the armature. Eventually though as you will know, I bolted the grinder to the lathes bed and used the grinders own power to turn the shaft.
With your ideas the lathe can obviously run at a slowish speed and there would no chance of the whole thing rotating so no doubt some simple restrainer did the job.
Regarding the fit of the bearings, as I was purchasing from the local B and Q I took if off the shelf and give it a tug or two before purchasing, like you Neil I was surprised just how free of play it was. With the task complete I was very pleased how vibration free it was when run.
