Hi

I see several threads about cleaning a 3-jaw but how about dismantling, cleaning and putting together a Griptru?

Am about to guy a second as I think they are excellent.

I note that some people say a 4-jaw independent is better, but, if so, how do I hold hexagon rod in it?

Any info on the Griptru would be welcome.

Hello Richard,

It is little different to cleaning a standard three jaw chuck really. The added features of the individual cones that make the micro adjustments to individual jaw setting take quite a lot of patience to get right afterwards.

Ideally you need a good test bar gripped in the jaws for the work along with a DTI but a reliable piece of silver steel will do instead.Use the hex key on the cross bar of the chuck key to make those adjustments, checking by DTI close to and 2 or 3 inches away from the chuck before nipping up the backplate bolts. Then check again and repeat if things have moved

The chuck should hold those settings for that diameter for a long time afterwards.

Light oil is the correct lubricant

I've never had the need to, but it is possible to hold hex bar in a four jaw chuck. Using an indicator to true it up might be a bit of a challenge? A four jaw self-centreing chuck will hold it on centre though – I think it was mentioned in one of Dan Gelbart's Youtube videos.

Easiest way to hold square bar in 3 jaw is to make a bush- turn o/s to round, drill to the across corner dim. and split with hacksaw. The sizes depend on what you need but would have wall thickness min. 3mm. Rub a file over the corners of the bar. This is not super accurate but works.
