Can gears be bought cheaply or as continuous bar?

Does anyone know if gears can be bought cheaply or perhaps as a continuous bar – a bit like you can with T5 toothed pulleys as per below?

I have a project where I need 4 gears (3 the same and roughly 25-45mm pcd, one perhaps 2.5 to 5 times larger), I will use my lathe change wheels if I have too but I hoped a better cheaper solution might exist.

Thanks in advance to anyone who could offer assistance, I know I don't offer much (any!?) useful advice on the forum and its because I'm not that useful or experienced. To give a little back I would happily share my project plans with the forum once I've drawn them up as I think some of you might like it.

You are not going to find regular gears much cheaper than change wheels on ebay and they can sometimes be rather optimistically priced. Otherwise random gears from a random bit of scrapped machinery would be the only low cost source. That might be viable if you found a suitable one in a machine that was both common and commonly scrapped – eg a motorbike gearbox.

You don't give much info regarding the use or loading on your gears but HPC do sell moulded plastic gears for £3 to £5 each and 75mm diameter will come for £12 so if your tooth loading is appropriate you could do worse than look at some ready made plastic gears.

Russ – when Chester Tools have been at the shows they've had a box of gears for you to sort through at cheap prices. Might be worth giving them a ring and see if they've got anything suitable. Otherwise Technobots (satisfied customer) do a range of steel 1.5 and 2 mod gears at reasonable prices – cheaper than most of the change wheels on EBay.

Pinion stock or pinion wire is what the lengths are called but if you only want 3 gears it would be more cost effective to just buy 3 gears unless you want very wide ones. Or just machine up a length and part them off.
