C1 Quick Change Post and Tool Chest question

Hello all

I am interested to know if there is a different quick change post for the Sieg C1 – I see the one arceurotrade sell but wondered if there were any others? I recently acquired a compound slide for my C1 for a bargain price.

I am still starting out, and wondered if there was a 40cm or 15" 3/4 wide tool chest out there? I have seen one by Sealeys for over £200. I do not have the budget for that. I have limited space hence the width restriction, and as I slowly acquire more tools and bits I am needing storage!

I find steel filling cabinets ideal for tool storage and they are all the same width but can be two, three, four or five drawer unit that you can section off and if you have Freggle or Freecycle they pop up free.

Agree steel filing cabinets make good storage units but does anyone have a good idea to use all of the drawer volume, ? it needs some kind of hinging/folding container arrangement to to useful for small tools, there is loads of depth and height.

Always make sure before fully opening a drawer that the whole unit is not going to be pulled over because it's top heavy.

I've been looking for a Bisley cabinet for the right price for years. They have much shallower drawers than usual filing cabinets and so are great for tool storage.

For small precision tools I suggest you buy a "Bisley" paper storage cabinet made of steel with drawers about 2" deep. They are available in e.g. 5, 8 10 15 etc. drawer units . They are a very good second hand buy from used office furniture dealers. I still have and use a 5 drawer version purchased many years ago before I could not afford a genuine toolmakers chest.

Wooden chests are constantly advertised on eBay but good ones make silly money however ones with a little damage can go for more reasonable amounts.

Car boot sales are a very good place to find both toolmakers cabinets and Bisley paper draw units.

Machine Mart sell new Chinese ones that should serve very well at about £131 or if you look out for their VAT free days £109.

Full size filling cabinets are not much use in a small workshop as the drawers are too deep meaning that small items would need to be pilled on top of each other.

Thank you for the replies. The Bisley looks ideal, and you can get inserts for it.

On this C1 the chap got quick release keys for the tail stock, I have not seen any like that for sale. Did he likely make them himself?

I made a couple of clamp bolts something like that for my C1, anything is better than the allen headed bolts fitted originally, but now use two of these clamps the size needed is M5 x 40 but needs a little 6mm long spacer turning up.

I use this quick change toolpost from Arc Eurotrade and it works fine. I think they now have a different, possibly better, one as well having seen an advert somewhere recently.

No connection with either co etc. blah, wasn't me guv!

Thanks Andy, that is very helpful.

As a fellow C1 owner what is your procedure for lubrication? The manual describes a hole that is available for oiling the leadscrew but I am ******* if I can find it.

Most of the time I don't ! which is probably why there is nearly 1mm of backlash in the leadscrew now. If I remember I point the oil can nozzle up under the bed and no I never found that hole either, mine is the Chester version but they don't seem to differ much.
