Does anybody know the issue number of the articule of how to machine the large radius on the face of a buffer head? It appeared in M.E. i'm sure but i can't find any reference to it. It involved connecting a shaft from the head stock to the cross slide.

          Hello Alan.

Querying the ME_Indexes  **LINK**  application with criteria "buffer head" on title I could find only an article:
Year: 2006, Volume: 197, issue 4277, Page: 26, Author: Tim Coles.
However if searching with criteria "buffer" I can find 33 ocurrences. If You are interested in these 33 ocurrences please let me know (or download the application and search by yourself).

          Hope this information is usefull.

          Best regards

            Hi Alan,

It is 4277 as Dias says. Works a treat!

Thats it gentlemen, thankyou, i did'nt think it was that far back then i realised it was an issue containing the nemett engine construction details which i had kept separate. Thanks again Alan.

                Alan,

On the few occasions I have needed to machine a large radius face, I have used co-ordinate turning. It involves taking a series of very small cuts at calculated depths, followed by smoothing with a fine file. I have an Excel spreadsheet for calculating the coordinates, and it can do parabolas as well as circles, I think it also does hyperbolae but these involve a bit more conceptual struggling to decide the parameters.

Sounds complicated, but in practice takes a small fraction of the time you would spend making an attachment and template unless you need to make lots the same size.

Any large radius on the end of something can be cut to any required accuracy using tangent cuts . First cut is simple facing off , second cut is a few degrees slope , second one is bit steeper etc .

Three cuts will produce a pretty good approximation , five cuts will produce a visually super surface and seven cuts a surface so near correct that you can't tell the difference from spherical .

Done even reasonably well no merging of cuts or filing is usually nescessary .

Needs to be laid out beforehand on drawing or CAD . Simple layout uses flats about same width each . Better layout use flats which become narrower as outer diameter approached .

                  Michael Williams .

I'm sure Michael W's suggestion will give excellent results

I just took one angled cut then blended in with a file.and got this result:

                    Getting there 1
