        @jasonb

        A friend of my mothers husband recently died and he had a few Marklin engines.

        This one is a convertable and can also be mounted horizontally on the base but all the convertables that I can see on teh net ( No 401 & No 402) have two bosses near the chimney set at angles, this just has one central boss for the safety.

        So any idea of the age and model number, the trademark has teh Cei on on elevel and not underlined and there is a number 5 stamped in the top left of teh plaque.

        Thanks, Jason

          Hi Jason,

          I am not a steam expert but as far as I know Marklin made 2 convertables. The types are 401/5 and 402. You will find lots of information if you Google on Marklin 401/5 or 402.

          Regards, Johan.

            Thanks Johan, as I said above all the ones that I could find on the net were the 401 or 402 and this one is different.

            From info gained on the Marklin forum it seems this is the earlier 4099/1, one being smaller than 2 see here

            Jason
