I have aquired an Adept swivel machine vise with one mounting lug broken off.

What repair method should I use? Carefully braze on a mild steel lug by means of good workshop practice (vee-ing out and preheating), Sending out to a specialist welding shop or attaching a sub base of say 6mm plate and fixing underneath with csk cap screws or is there a better fourth method?

          Hi,

You could make up a new base but that is probably not cost effective. The easiest is a sub plate underneath but it won't look the best. Welding or brazing will look the best but you have the distortion risk.

I would say that it all depends how much effort you want to spend vs how you want the repair to look.

          Regards

            Hi William,

Take it you mean bronze brazing, if so in a previous life i did quite a lot of cast iron repairs both with oxy and electric…there are some special rods (electric) for cast iron which along with good preparation and pre-heating/slow cooling produce a very good job..need a little grinding to tidy up the welds but otherwise quite acceptable….bronze brazing works too but you need a lot more pre-heating of the item and a good heat source ie oxy acetalyne…tried it with oxy/lp and heat input not so good…but depends on how thick the item is and how big as the rest of the item 'heatsinks' the heat away from the repair..

            Regards

            Brian
