It seems like Maxwell Hemments were highly regarded for quality (though not, perhaps, for commercial competence), see, for example:

Thanks to both of you! Yes, I also think that coal firing might be a bit of a hassle; gas firing is probably the better option there. However, the Maxwell engine is a one-inch model designed for coal firing. It is brand new and has just been sitting on a shelf—and well, €2,000 is certainly no small amount. If it were a 1½-inch engine, I would go for it. But for now, I still have a bit of work to do on my current one.
