I have just purchased a casting for the cylinder of a 1″ Minnie. As there is not enough room for the fixings to the boiler I presume it fixes to the cylinder saddle first for which I have drawings. But how does it fit? Also what is the thickness of the cylinder saddle which does not seem to be shown on the drawings I have? Thanks

      Geoff

There is machining allowance on ALL surfaces, by the time you have got them all down to size there is plenty of room for nut or bolts .

The saddle is an integral part of the casting so not sure what your castings actually are, can you post some photos. The saddle is dimensioned as 5/32″ thick but may come up a little less

          Hi Geoff,

All the MAP sourced drawings and book show the integral saddle with dimensions.

There are some strange cylinder castings out there, I have one that looks more like a letter P that I got with the gears I wanted. however I have never seen one without the saddle.

Where did you get it from?

Just thought, didn’t we have a conversation on here this month about fixing the saddle separately to a boiler? Found it – not very helpful after all.

If it is a separate casting then firstly ask the supplier if they have a revised drawing.

If that fails then you have two options.

            1. Cap head screws up from below with counterbored holes in the underside of the saddle

            2. Just silver silder the two together and treat as one.

3 if the castings are not that good and as all surfaces will need machining, start with a block of metal and replicate the single casting with integral saddle.

              Hi Folks,

Thanks for all the replies I will complete the preparation of the cylinder and then check all the dimensions. In the meantime I attach 3 photos which prompted my query:

PS: Can’t seem to be able to attach photos – how do you do this? I have dragged it into my reply, it fills the screen but I then can’t get back to submit. Technology!

                      Hi,

I tried to change my username but just got this message:

Why can’t I change my username?
Once a username has been set this can’t be changed. If your username has been migrated over from our old forum (pre-September 2023) this may have changed due to incompatible characters on the new system.

                      Any suggestions?

                      Geoff

Go further down and you can change the publicly displayed name which is the one directly under an avatar in blue. Not much that can be done with the black one at the bottom.

There is usually a bit of material that can come off the vertical side faces below where the valve chest fits and under the curved side of the cylinder. That combined with getting rid of the fillets where the cylinder meets the saddl eshould give enouugh room for fixings.
