Hi just introducing myself my name is Michael I live in Australia and I’ve just inherited my first lathe and it’s been nearly 40 years since I used one back in high school, so I have a lot to learn and this looked like a good place to start

The lathe I’ve inherited is I think a premo Mk II it has a fair bit of tooling with it my father got it from someone he knows that owned a small Volkswagen dealership and apparently has done very little work my first job on it I was trying to redo the wiring as it was in the old hose like conduit with brass and metal joiners and after starting that I found out that it was only wired up to run in one direction and was hoping to get it wired up correctly with forward and reverse and add a kill switch if anybody can help I’d be rather grateful having trouble uploading photos at the moment probably my dodgy internet

Welcome to the forum Sir, Give us details of the motor and any other relevant info and I’m sure one of us will be able to help. Eg, supply voltage, number of phases, does it already have a reversing switch any motor data. Best wishes, Noel.

Given details ,of the motor, someone on here will be able to provide deatils of how to reverse the motor.

Hopefully, the terminal box will have sperate terminals for the start and run windings (Assuming that it is a domestic mains, single phase motor)

If it has drum type reversing switch, it is recommended to use a separate On/Off switch, using the drum switch purely for changing the direction of rotation, when the motor is stationary.

Which will lead onto the warning , if the chuck is a screw on variety, about the risks of running in reverse, and loosening it.

Hi Michael, I also live on Oz and when I got my lathe (an early 9″ Southbend like a Hercus), the motor that came with the lathe was not reversible. (Not all motors are) It had a drum switch but wired for one direction only and found that the contacts in the switch were slightly burnt. I replaced the motor with one that was reversible, cleaned the contacts in the drum switch and added a separate push button on/off switch. The lathe has a screw on chuck and I rarely run the lathe in reverse.
