      Hello All

Could I open with what I think (hope) will be a very simple question by wishing everyone a very peaceful, but above all, healthy 2026.

Question is….I have a right cutting, insert type lathe tool that is too high for the axis of my lathes. (Chester Super B and Proxxon PD400). I want to mill about 1 or 2mm off the bottom of the tool – with about 20mm.

I’ve tried a four flute HSS endmill and a small face mill with three inserts but neither will ‘look at it’.

The body of the tool is black and I think itself maybe HSS.

I think I need carbide? I’m looking on German Amazon but am not sure of ‘spec’ or when I get it, speed.

Advice – not shallower tool(!) – only joking.

Many many thanks in advance.  Martyn

I use carbide tooling to mill down tools.

In my experience, even very cheap tool bodies can be very tough!

Some tool holders are hardened more than others.

Your insert tool I assume was carbide so if that was not touching it you may have difficulty.

If you want to try a solid cutter then get one designed for the harder steels that says it will cut 60HRC. Similar with inserts look for ones designed for the harder more difficult steels often classed as “group S” rather than just basic general purpose ones.

Would it be possible and likely simpler and cheaper, to replace the holder with a smaller version for the same inserts?

That’s been my experience as well. I’ve milled down a few with carbide.

It is highly unlikely that the tool body will be HSS, as it is expensive and its ability to cut when red hot isn’t needed.

It is perfectly possible to cut toughened/hardened steel with carbide endmills. There are some important points to note:

                  • Use a commercial quality endmill that is properly ground and sharp
                  • Run high speeds, shallow depth of cut and reasonable chip loads
                  • The ideal is for the shear zone at the cutting tool to be red heat as it will then be soft
                  • A rigid mill helps but is not essential – I have milled HSS on a hobby grade CNC mill

If all else fails you could show it the angle grinder !!

                      Cost of cheap tool £5-20

                      Cost of carbide cutter £15-30

                      Is it worth it?

Though if comparing a cheap tool then a cheap cutter could be had for £5-6 and that for cutting steel to 65HRC

There is also the possibility of holding it bottom face out in a 4-jaw and provided you have some other insert turning tools then you are only in it for the cost of a corner of an insert.

As long as you can arrange a straight cut right through, an angle grinder in a stand with a 1mm thick disk, and the work clamped, normally gives a good result. You may need to allow for heat build up, but it can be completed in several short sessions if necessary.

I have milled dozens of 20mm square lathe tools down to 17.53mm to enable them to get on c/l without bothering to shim. Both lathes use exactly the same height tooling. All have been milled with shell mills using inserts for steel, most with a 50mm Ceratizit 5 insert which uses round inserts which can be indexed up to 8 places. The holders are all tough steel, the cheap Chinese ones take just as much effort to mill as the top brands like Sandvik and Kennametal. You can get inserted endmills down to 8mm diameter and a 2 or 3 insert holder between 12 and 16mm would work well in a small mill.

I had an insert carbide mill (2 insert) anyway so using it to trim down over size tooling is a no brainer.

I too have trimmed down tools to put them permanently on centre height in a four way tool post. Far more rigid on my Mini lathe than a QCTP.

Grind it. Bench or angle grinder.

Put some shims on the sides if youre not confident to get it parallel

I agree.  Unless there’s a d****d good reason I avoid machining difficult metals.  Too many other things to waste time and money on!

At least no-one has suggested grinding lumps out of the lathe so the holder will fit it.  Been done…

                                      🙂

                                          Hello All

10mm tungsten carbide 60HRC spec (from AliExpress)) as suggested by jasonb – knife through butter! Thank you.

For folk like me, who have an inherent fear of angle grinders, I think this is a better/safer solution.

                                            Good to know

I think the 4-jaw chuck would be the least painful and quickest (except for the shooting hot chips).

I hadn’t considered it myself, but I have many from my Turning days that I will now consider modifying before buying inferior mini-size tools.

BTW if you are using a quick-change TP, oversized toolholders may be available?

                                            cheers
