      I discovered how our ancestors measured distances without Google Maps. I’ve never seen anything like this before. It’s quite interesting.

          “ancestors” They are not that old !

          I used to have one in the 1980’s. Back when we used maps in cars, before we had Google and GPS navigation.

            Yes – a conventional map-measurer. I didn’t know it has a fancy name!

            I had (not sure if still have) a sort of poor man’s version that used something like a continuous loop tape-measure inside a cylindrical body.

                  I use these devices as I lead walks in the countryside and trace the path from an OS type map so that walkers can be informed of the distance to be walked.

                      Hi, I guess mine is a bit of a pauper’s one, but it’s not too bulky to carry on walk, however, it’s easily lost if you should drop it on rough ground.

                      This belonged to my father, and I can remember him showing me how to use it, probably when I was about six or seven years old.
