I want to replace the pressure gauge on a boiler but am puzzling over how to fit the olive which is meant to be sleeved inside the syphon pipe. Its OD seems to be 3/32" which is too large for sleeving inside 1/8" pipe and a sloppy fit in 5/32" pipe. Do I enlarge the 1/8" pipe somehow or just fill up the gap with solder on the 5/32" pipe. Also any tips on avoiding soldering the nut would also be welcome.

Can you post a picture, most model engine pipework uses a ferrule or nipple that is soldered to the pipe.

The gauge (1 inch diam) is pictured in most ME catalogues, e.g. Polly Engineering and Blackgates. The olive/ferrule/nipple clearly needs to be sleeved inside the copper pipe before soldering rather than over it.

Howard a 1" gauge is usually plumbed in with 1/16" pipe which will fit INSIDE the brass nipple supplied

Some thing like this one from Macc Models

Here is one of mine, OK its sitting on a 1/16" drill bit but thats how they fit to copper pipe, if you want to run a larger pipe then you will have to make an adaptor

Thanks Jason, no wonder I'm struggling. I probably read the term "sleeve" somewhere and misinterpreted it. I was also probably mislead by the pipework (1/8&quot on the old gauge I'm replacing. Now to order some 1/16" pipe!

Sorry about the emoticon in the previous post – how did I do that?

I find that if you double space at the end before you put the last parenthesis ( bracket ) in usually works

It's " next to ) that causes the problem.
