        i have no problem using the fly cutter for brass and cast but i cant keep the hss tool sharp ob mild steel. is there some black art to it? I was trying to profile a steam dome to fit the boiler.

          What speed are you running at? would you turn steel in the lathe of the same dia as the boiler at that speed?

            Yes, too high a speed will quickly dull a HSS flycutter. What sort of profile have you ground the cutter as well, I'm a big fan of a nicely radiused cutter to get a good finish. Having said all that I sometimes use a round carbide insert in my flycutter on hard materials.

              its not speed – learned that one way back! tried pointy and radius tool, even tries carbide tool. got there in the end but one thou at a time. im missing something!¬

                Hi Fizzy

                I bought a few (random) round inserts from fleabay, milled a flat on the end of a piece of1/2" Silver steel, drilled/tapped a hole for an M3 capscrew and used it in my 2" boring head to fly cut the bottom of my chimney casting for my 6" traction engine (7" radius) I was able to remove 10 thou per cut comfortably.One insert deskinned the casting and removed more than 50 thou in total…. I did wonder if it would handle the interrupted cut, but it worked like a dream and gave a pretty good finish….

                  That's pretty much how I made mine as well Mark. I've since discovered that you can even sharpen the inserts on a diamond stone if needed. Once sharpened in this way you can even use them on the brown stuff if you're that way inclined!
