Need advice.
I'm building a Stuart V10, beginners course.
I have seen that some machines have drain taps on the cylinder.
Is this necessary?
If you have such cranes, it becomes the very crowded for one screw to the two caps to the cylinder., Which then ends up in the middle of the hole for the tap.
How to solve it?
Find nothing in the book, drawing or Harold Hall's web page.

When you want to paint the machine, you need a Primmer first?

Locating the taps at the side givs better space for the bolts.

Hello Berra,

All steam engines have drain cocks on both sides of the cylinder to drain any water that may be in the steam lines. When you first start a steam engine you leave the cocks open and only close them after the engine has been warmed thru and all of the water disappears.

Water does not compress and if the cylinder is full of water when the piston is advance you will either bend a piston rod, crack the cylinder head or blow the end off your cylinder head.

On a slide valve engine such as the 10V, the chances of blowing a cylinder cover off or bending the rod or very small. In all likelyhood, all that will happen is that the valve will lift from the port face and the condensate wil escape through the exhaust.

If you go to the final page of my Stuart series on the web Berra you will see a picture of the four engines that I have made, only the first one for the fun of it, the others to provide articles for the magazine.

You will see that I have only fitted taps to one off, that being the first, Since then I have omitted them to keep the costs down. Non of them have been run, perhaps one day I will find the time, and the confidence, to make a boiler, but that day never seems to arrive, Shame really.

Fortunately, those who know more about running them appear above to have answered your question.

Whether drain cocks are necessary depends also on what medium will be used to run the engine. I have 2 Stuart 10s which I run on compressed air and then drain cocks are not at all needed.

When painting my engines I used Stuart paints and found that it went on well without primer and seems to be lasting OK. Again, if the engine is to be run on steam it may be different.

Svarven, it is not difficult to make the drain cocks. Or you can buy the drain cocks from Eskader as here http://www.eskader.se/sv/modellmaskiner/22-drain-taps.html

A short time ago I rebuilt a Stuart S6, the cylinder was drilled and taped for drain cocks, but as they among other things had been lost, and I was too lazy, I made hex headed plugs with 3/16"model engineer thread, as the engine is to be run on air, the drain cocks are not needed. Ian S C

I made a few engines this size way back and to be honest you dont need drain cocks, even on steam.Mine didnt have rings, maybe thats why I got away with it?

Drain Cocks? – well you may not NEED them – but they do look good!

Painting – I would use a primer.

How about posting a photo of the finished model?

From what I see, some people get away with one drain cock, and a manifold joining both drain holes. On my S6 the drains are on the side of the cylinder, nice and easy to get at, but I would have thought, that to be fully effective, the drains should be on the under side of the cylinder, I'm no steam expert, so I may be wrong. With drain cocks are practical to warm up the steam engine cylinder and get rid off the water from the cylinder and, you has cylinder oil allready into the steam engine before start ut the steam engine.

It is important if you has twin cylinder steam engine in the model steam engine and need troublefree start up the steam engine with radio control connected to drain cocks.
