I know I can hunt around, but are there any sites that deal with reviews of metalworking lathes?

      Something like this

      http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/buying-advice-tool-reviews.html

      only for metalwork?

      Thanks again,

          Graham,

          Have a look at **LINK**

          Should cover most machines.

Hi David, and thanks – that’s a fantastic resource. But I was thinking more of user reviews (of current machines)?

Best thing.. if you have a lathe in particular you want info on from actual users, look at previous threads or post the question.

No Warco lathes on that site (that I could find) sadly.

Hi – Ok! Anyone got any experience of the Warco Super Mini to pass on?
And PS, just to show off my ignorance, I think ‘Maximum swing’ (180mm) is the max diameter workpiece it will turn, but what is ‘Swing over cross slide’ (100mm)? Is it the maximum cuttable diameter?

Hi, I can offer a review of my BH600G lathe from Warco which was also reviewed bu Anthony Mount in the ME 2003/4.

Graham, your surmise is correct., obviously the cross slide height limits the maximum diameter of anything projecting towards the tailstock which actually passes over the cross slide. If it does not need to pass over then you can turn, say a wheel or flywheel up to the maximum swing.

You could try searching the me & mew index for the lathe you are interested in and some similar names especially when it is sold by several vendors in virtually the same form.

I have often thought ME should do a quality in depth review of every major new lathe with systematic cross references to the similar ones as they come along and with detail about their rebadging and manufacturer. Not so much for today but for 50 years hence when their origins are long forgotten. Just look at all those 'what is this' queries on this forum and unknown lathes on ebay. It should be possible to find the details in past mags.

Bazyle, you must remember ME does not do anything, it relies and has always relied upon material being submitted. They are not staffed for writing only editing.

good point. they could solicit input from the mfr / importer and edit out the blatent advertising. Otherwise it could be a way for a new purchaser to earn a few bob back. I wonder if they want a review of an MT3 drill chuck smiley

Why don't we start the ball rolling by posting threads in the workshop tooling topic? A few photos, how long you have had the machine, strengths and weaknesses and any modifications (both essential or convenient).

Similar machines (e.g. the various versions of mini-lathe could all share the same thread).

Graham, if it's of any help, I have a small Warco lathe, and did a sort of review here on my website.
