Does anyone out there know how to set the preload on the main headstock spindle bearings on the Student 1800 please? These machines are fitted with two Gamet taper roller bearings, the left-hand one being a spring-loaded P type. The maker's manual is no help.

The reply on the Colchester Group site is nonsense. With 4mm of movement, there would be virtually zero preload on the springs. The only free movement required at the springs is to account for thermal expansion, which would be nowhere near 4mm. I am guessing that only a few thou would be needed, but am trying to get at how they were set in production. I have been onto both Colchester and Gamet, with little joy.
