Amongst my collection of tool inserts I have a number of these. The tip shape / cutting angles look useful but I have been unable to find a suitable holder. Do any of you know what make/ type of holder they will fit?

The cross sectional sizes of the three different insert tips are:

      3.1w x 5.2h x 16 long; 5.1w x 6.27h x 22 long ; and 8.12w x 7.22 h x 25 long and the 'key indent' on their bottom edges is 3.5mm diameter.

Any help appreciated as the tip geometry looks sharper and more conventional than many of the current inserts and and may therefore be better suited to the lighter cutting speeds and feeds of model engineering lathes. The V point (thread cutting) tips look especially useful.

David, a picture of the 'sides' was included in my post and still shows for me when I open my original post. I now attach a top view. Do I need to upload these to the gallery (if they are not displayed when you read my posting)?

The pictures don't seem to be in your album, did you try to put them up directly?

To be brutally honest, unless you have a good stock of tips, as holders cost a lot more than tips./

Also, wired tips mean expensive holders and hard to get more in the future.

You are probably better off buying holders for easily obtained tips, as this should work our cheaper, maybe even in the short term.

That said, it may well be worth the effort of making a holder for specialist ones, such as the threading insert, if this is likely to get only occasional use.

Just to add, there are plenty of easy to get conventional tips that work well on small lathes.

From the Sandvik Coromat T-MAX tooling range of grooving and parting inserts, typical parting tool insert is R154.913 215

Thanks Neil and Emgee, I had not seen that pattern on Sandvik before but can now see what type of holder they were designed for. It could be years before I find a T-max holder second hand but at least i know what I am looking for now.

Taking Neil's point I might make a holder and see how well they cut, but this might prove more effort than its worth!!

I'd start by grooving a bar and silver soldering a length of rod across it.

arcEurotrade do a range of grooving toolholders that may be suitable for those inserts you have, depends on the height of the arc inserts.
The holder width may be too small for heavy cutting with a wider insert but with care should be OK.

Thanks Emgee, not sure mine will fit as the have 15 degree double bevel on underside and are somewhat wider than the Arc items.
