Microscope Equipment, What is it please?

Hi All,

Todays delivery from my friendly local house clearance guy included this nice cased item.

Something to do with a Vickers microscope, I would appreciate any info on how to describe this thing please.

Hi there, Martin,

Your kit is a hardness testing set. The cylindrical gizmo is a hydraulic (I think) indenter. The Vernier eyepiece is fitted to the (a? ) microscope and used to measure the diameter of the indentation. This is looked-up in Tables to translate to hardness.

I guess it has to be hardness on the Vickers scale.

Did you receive the microscope with it?

What else did you get?

I think its a micro hardness tester, for testing the hardness of specimens that will not take the higher indentation loads from the usual Vickers hardness tester. Thin strip and the like. From memory the loads were in grams for micro hardness and kilograms for macro tester.

As John says it's is for micro-hardness. The diamond indenter is small enough to be able to select different phases in a metallographic specimen. The indenter is powered by air pressure via a press on plastic tube from the cylinder. I used to use one, bought new in the 1980s.

Many thanks guys, it had me beaten!

I remember doing hardness measurements in one of my Uni sandwich course sections, measuring a small pyramid dent in material that had had a load pressed on a small diamond shaped ram.

Would you say it is totally obsolete or perhaps of some use/value?

Swarf, it came with a bunch of other non related stuff, kit that is more in my usual line, some nice woodworking tools, panel beaters tools, set of ER32 collets and chucks, small ADEPT lathe etc

The clearance guys round here always put stuff aside for me and give me first dibs which is really useful as I never know what they are going to turn up with. Sometimes it is like Xmas every day!

Basically anything they do not have a clue about they save and drop round for me to have a look at. I turn away a lot of rubbish, but sometimes I buy some crap anyway just so they keep coming round. Would not want them to stop!
