unidentified castings

As a long time viewer of this site but mostly in the background I'm aware of the huge depth of model engineering knowledge out there and I'd be grateful for some help in identifying some unknown castings. They came in a box of bits from my favourite scrapyard and looked too useful to just leave there!

Photos in my album (I'll try to attach them but not sure how that will go). They seem to come in 4 groups: there's the back and 2 front castings for a Stuart Turner lancashire boiler (at least I knew that one); there's a very nice cylinder with end caps and two "brackets" (the green ones); what appears to be a set of castings (painted in red oxide) for some type of twin cylinder stationary engine; and a few miscellaneous gunmetal castings which may be linked or may be completely separate.

I'd be very grateful if anyone recognises any of this stuff or could point me in the right direction.

The tray on the left in red oxide looks like a stuart Victoria twin engine.

Red ones are definately Clarkson, the two "L" shaped bedplates are not like Victoria and the two large "discs" form th eends of the cable drum, also has trunk guides where as Victoria has bar guides.

The red ones are definitely for the Clarkson's compound mill engine as Jason says. (I know as I am just finishing one). It's the complete casting set minus the 3 castings for the rope drum. Three of the bronze ones are for Stuart Turner's steam boiler feed pump. The main frame/ pump body, cyl., and one cyl. cover.

This site is wonderful- you post a query, go off and have your tea and a couple of hours later it's mostly answered. We're the Clarkson compound or the Stuart Turner boiler feed pump ever serialised in Model engineer. I've just found a build log for the fed pump but nothing for the compound mill engine. Also are plans available anywhere? Thanks again for all the help. Sandy

I don't recall either being serialized in ME (that's back to '79 as far as mine go ). The feed pump is available from Stuart models.

Blackgates now have the Clarkson drawings and castings, check their catalogue. The cat I have says the drawings are currently available and to call about castings. The only castings they currently list in the cat are for the 1" vert. and 1" horiz. steam engine. Both of these engines use parts in common with the twin compound. Namely the cyl., cyl covers,bed plate, valve chest and cover, trunk guide, crank disk and flywheel. The flywheel is what is used on the compound for the ends of the rope drum (which you seem to be missing along with the casting for the drum itself ).

It would not be hard to make the missing drum parts from some steel or iron and may even be a cheaper option than getting teh castings from Blackgates who can supply individual Clarkson castings.

Or you could substitute a flywheel inplace of the drum.
