We’ve just been watching an episode of the [pretty lightweight] TV programme about the V&A Museum … and were impressed by the feature about this:

It's difficult to know what the hero-arm site means by "below-elbow limb difference."

Does anyone know for sure?

As I understand it, Bill … it’s part of what I meant by ‘culturally’

… as in saying ‘differently abled’ not ‘disabled’

Another quote is :

Welcome to the future, where disabilities are superpowers.

Both are part of their marketing pitch.

Being a person who has a brachial plexus root avulsion and permanent paralysis of major muscles groups in my right arm, I find that sort of language quite irritating, Michael.

It reminds me of the big sign over the Remploy HQ in Birmingham I visited a few years ago: "Remploy – Putting Ability First", it said.

If they were putting ability first then disabled people would not get a look in at Remploy.

If people mean what they say they should say what they mean.

My wife tells me that the last episode was supposed to be about Faberge. She was surprised that the broadcast was not as advertised. Could this be “ sensitivity” about Russia etc? If so it is about as wet and goosey as Remploy’s well meaning “right on “ sign.

If your wife wants to see the episode featuring fabulous works by Faberge it is episode 2 which was broadcast on Wednesday 13th.

Works by John Constable were also featured.

I know because we watched it live.

I have not seen the robot arm episode yet though.

I am genuinely sorry to read that, Bill

I am absolutely certain that these people are successfully motivating youngsters [in particular] to have higher self-esteem, and to do more than they ever thought they might.

P.S. __ I actually found it quite inspiring to see the young lady that they featured in the programme …happy with her prosthetics, and proud & confident enough to wear them as a ‘statement’ .
