Unfortunately Landylift, seemingly the most recommended mover on this forum, is booked up til late May.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions to move a Cromwell S800 from Notts to Swansea ideally in the next 10 days? Access both ends is easy. Out of a garage with a flat drive into a garage with a flat drive.

I tried Shiply but am not 100% of some of the responses so far. Most firms seem to be used to sofas and household stuff rather than precision machinery.

Any hints grateful received.

Hire a Luton tail lift van the limit is 500kg on the lift + a pallet truck

You could try Steve Liliman at Premier Machine tools. He used to have a lorry but it got too expensive to run so he may know of someone local as he seems to be trading again. He's based in Blidworth near Nottingham.

A few months ago I was looking at moving a machine from Stroud to Notts but had to put on hold as I could not find anyone out side of proper machine movers at the cost involved.

Andrew – when I bought my S800 last year, I moved it myself with an engine crane. I detached the lathe from the base and mounted it on two battens of wood under the feet (3"x 3&quot, which you can then safely use to lift the lathe and move it into a van – but be careful as the lathe does tend to tip. You can do the same with the base and bolt battens under the feet and lift it with the engine crane, again carefully. You shouldn't have too many problems if you've flat hard surfaces at either end. I had help loading it onto a large transit but unloaded it on my own where access was much easier. It really wasn't too bad. I bought the engine crane (as no-one had one locally to hire) and was glad I did as it made moving the base and lathe around in my garage to paint it much easier.

Many thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Unfortunately I am abroad at the moment or would certainly have attempted the move myself or with the assistance of my brother who is even older and punier than me.

I contacted 17 movers in the end. Responses ranged from no interest in the job, high prices (£1,200 plus VAT) or "over confidence" in the ability of a two man team to hoik the complete, unassembled machine into a transit for £500. In fairness they may have been possessed of extraordinary strength but I was reluctant to commit the machine to their raw ambition. I hope I didn't do them a disservice.

Fortunately Landylift had a cancellation. Hopefully the machine will be delivered today and my 5' tall, 7stone wife will be there. She may be small but I reckon the acquisition of yet another lathe will prove sufficient to generate feats of superhuman strength and she will position it exactly where I want it. Or just take a sledgehammer to it . . .

Now I need to shift the BCA jig borer and a Pultra to offset the delivery cost.
