Hi. I was wondering whether to solder or silver solder 5/32 copper pipe to the nipples. My working steam pressure is 90 PSI and I would have thought soft soldering would be strong enough. Can some one advise me please.

Silver solder every time. Whenever in the past I have soft soldered nipples I have always regretted it as they inevitably fracture/break. Phil

Hi Gary,

Aim for a joint gap of about 0.1mm radial.

Aim for a joint length of 5-6x wall thickness of the tube.

Ensure components are free of grease. Use appropriate flux.

Ideally position soft solder (ring?) Inside the nipple. Like a Yorkshire fitting

Heat the nipple to draw the solder through the joint.

90 psi? a walk in the park.

Expect a joint strength 100 x that

I agree with Phil, I always silver solder pipe and nipples and never had bother with fractured joints.

If your pipe work is for your William Loco or that D&NY you show in your album then your pipe work needs to be silver soldered.
