Good evening

I have recently acquired a willson 7.5" lathe.From what I have been told its an earlier version with the 90 degree gear lever handles.

I am trying to find out more regarding the spindle fitting to the chuck backplate. The book for the lathe mentions 6tpi but no more. And i have managed to get the current 3 jaw and backplate off and the spindle measures 3.5 inches across. Would anyone here Know the thread type or even point me in the direction for another backplate or a 4 jaw chuck with a backplate, I'd also like to find a faceplate and a fixed steady.

I'm fairly novice to the lathe world so go easy on me

It will almost certainly be a Whitworth form thread (I assume your machine has a traditional screwed spindle).

Later lathes had American "L" type long taper spindles which may have specified a 60 degree thread; I will check my own, smaller, Willson slant bed when I next remove the chuck.

Quite a lathe for a novice – I wish you good luck with it!

Yes it has a traditional screw spindle. Info on them says about later ones being L type. I'd imagine yours would be a L type?

If the lathe uses a L0 fitting spindle, then the backplates are available new. Second hand ones come up on ebay frequently as well.

Thats a shame, a drawing of the spindle end would be helpful. There is a possibility that more than one type of chuck could share the same backplate, so the dimensions of the front of the plate would also be useful.
