I just bought a poorly vertical steam engine with a piston valve where the exhaust from the bottom of the cylinder moves through the centre of the valve and exits out the top face of the casting. Ive never seen this before and the tiny holes in the piston must be very restrictive to steam flow. Is it a decent design or should I replace it with a D valve? Anyone else got one?

The third engine I ever built back in 2013, a twin cylinder vertical called Paddleduck designed by John "Bogstandard" Moore, has just this arrrangement with the exhaust being collected and piped away as the engine was designed for use in a boat. I only run it on air but It works fine.
